Supporting Young Carers at OATQ

At OATQ, we are committed to identifying and supporting our Young Carers (YCs)—students who help look after a family member with an illness, disability, mental health condition, or addiction. We understand the unique challenges they face and work hard to ensure they feel supported, valued, and able to thrive in school.

Who is our primary contact?

What We Do:

  • Awareness & Education: Our Young Carers Lead delivers an annual assembly to every year group, helping students understand what it means to be a young carer and how to access support.
  • Dedicated Support: We maintain a confidential Young Carers register and provide tailored assistance, including flexible homework deadlines, access to homework clubs, and help with school trips.
  • Safe Spaces & Wellbeing: Young Carers can access a phone during breaks to contact home, and we offer opportunities for rest and informal meet-ups during the school day.
  • Family Support: We work closely with families to understand each student’s caring role and connect them with external organisations for additional help.

Why It Matters:
National data shows that young carers often face significant educational challenges. They are less likely to achieve expected standards at primary and secondary school and may struggle with attendance and wellbeing. At OATQ, we aim to close this gap by providing practical and emotional support.

If you think your child may be a young carer or would like more information, please contact our Young Carers Lead via the school office. Together, we can ensure every young carer has the support they need to succeed.
